In view of the several fatal road accidents in Uttarakhand in November, founder of the Social Development for Communities (SDC) Foundation, Anoop Nautiyal has urged the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to take strict measures against the rising number of road fatalities.
In a video message to the CM, he criticised the State’s recurring pattern of reactionary measures like suspending officials, issuing directives, organising meetings and ordering inquiries. He stated that these measures fail to address the root cause of the issue. He called for a transformative and sustained campaign, which he termed the ‘Safe Uttarakhand Campaign’. Nautiyal proposed a robust strategy focusing on the four E’s- Enforcement, Education, Engineering and Emergency Care.
He urged the State government to study and implement the most effective road safety practices and regulations from across the country. He suggested appointing a trusted individual within the chief minister’s circle to dedicate two years exclusively to road safety. He recommended that this person should allocate 80 per cent of his or her time to studying successful road safety models nationwide, collaborating with various government agencies and developing a tailored solution for Uttarakhand.
