The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Karan Mahara has held the Police and administration responsible for Wednesday’s incident involving Youth Congress workers and journalists.  In a statement released on Thursday, the PCC president termed the Police Lines incident unfortunate. He said that after detaining the workers of the Youth Congress and him from the secretariat march the Police took them to the Police Lines where the cricket match of the journalists was underway.

Mahara said that he and the Youth Congress workers were unaware about the cricket match and programme of the Uttaranchal Press Club. “The police usually take the detainees of protest to the Police Lines. We were not aware about the programme of the journalists and probably the journalists also thought that we had arrived there for some protest. The entire episode occurred due to some misunderstanding,’’ he said. The PCC president also expressed his regret over the unsavoury incident.

He said that the opposition and the journalists complement one another and their coordination is important for a healthy democracy. Mahara said that the police should have been present with the Congress workers or it should have made arrangements for detaining the party workers at some other place.
