The Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) chairwoman Kusum Kandwal has asked the Haridwar senior superintendent of police Pramendra Dobhal to take appropriate action in the alleged rape case of a 17-year-old athlete. Notably, the 38th National Games are set to commence in Uttarakhand on January 28, attracting youngsters to practice at the Roshnabad sports stadium in Haridwar. A 17-year- old player from the SIIDCUL police station area has alleged that her coach sexually assaulted her.
Considering this, Kandwal informed that the victim’s father informed her on phone that his daughter had attended practice with 30 other players when the coach summoned her to his room and sexually assaulted her. Recognising the gravity of the situation, Kandwal promptly contacted the Haridwar SSP seeking stringent measures in response to the incident. She said that the SSP informed her that the police acted only after the victim filed a complaint at the SIIDCUL police station, leading to the victim being referred to the district hospital for a medical examination. The medical check-up has been completed at the district hospital.
The accused coach has been apprehended, and an investigation into the case is underway, she said. She stated that she directed the SSP that the accused must face consequences without exception. It is imperative that stringent measures are enforced against him. In addition, she informed that she has also directed the District Sports Officer (DSO) to carry out a thorough investigation into the matter. She emphasised that the government is currently implementing various initiatives to encourage female participation in sports and therefore if coaches exhibiting such attitudes commit disgraceful acts against players, they will be held accountable. The USCW plays a vital role within the government, and any misconduct directed towards a daughter prompts the commission to respond swiftly, she added.
