GDMC’s ophthalmology department proposes two working units

In an effort to improve patient facilities, the ophthalmology department at Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) has proposed the establishment of two operational units in the hospital. To advance this initiative, departmental officials recently submitted a letter to the principal of the medical college Dr Geeta Jain.
Informing about this, the officials said that at present, there is only one operational unit in the department which occasionally hinders the provision of efficient services to patients in both the outpatient department and surgical settings. Currently, one doctor is responsible for overseeing the entire OPD seven days a week, alongside some new faculty members who work on a daily rotational basis.
The officials said that this arrangement complicates the workflow for senior doctors, making it challenging to maintain consistency in patient care with the constant changes in faculty. They further said that the presence of only one operational unit in the department often results in prolonged wait times for patients, insufficient supervision during surgical procedures and other related issues. Additionally, the National Medical Commission (NMC) stipulates that two operational units in the ophthalmology department of the medical colleges are essential for facilitating improved patient care. In light of this, the officials have recently submitted a letter to the college principal requesting the establishment of a second working unit in the department.
They further said that with the implementation of a second working unit, one professor in the department could engage in outpatient services while supervising faculty during eye surgeries on their designated off days and vice versa for the second professor. This development is anticipated to enhance departmental operations, address more patient concerns and increase the overall success rate of eye surgeries. It is hoped that the hospital administration will soon grant approval for the establishment of the two operational units in the department, official sources added.
