Young adults call for sustainable development ahead of ULB polls

In light of the urban local body elections scheduled for January 23, many young adults have advocated for cycle tracks, sustainable development and the creation of playgrounds in the district and across the State. They emphasised that the candidates nominated for these elections should prioritise sustainable development rather than merely treating it as a formality.
A young adult Vijay Pawar said that he has noticed that crucial issues tend to be overlooked in every election, whether it be for the Lok Sabha or ULB elections. Ahead of polling in the ULB elections, he believes it is essential for the elected candidates to focus on establishing playgrounds, which would positively impact the health of young adults. He further said that all development undertaken within the city or State should be focused on sustainability rather than being a temporary measure.
“I have noticed that the authorities have never been committed to sustainable development of the city. Further, the authorities need to develop the district according to the needs of residents, particularly senior citizens and young adults. I believe that the candidates elected in the ULB elections should prioritise the creation of a cycling track for young adults, as this initiative would encourage physical activity. Additionally, the roads in the Dehradun district need to be constructed thoughtfully, rather than merely as a formality for events or other occasions,” said another young adult Mayank Verma.
Shweta Arora who has recently joined a software company expressed her concerns by stating that she has not witnessed sustainable development in the Dehradun district for years. She emphasised that the elected candidates should focus on meaningful development, rather than performative gestures, aiming instead for sustainable progress that benefits future generations. Additionally, opportunities for young adults should also be explored, she said.
