Former chief minister Harish Rawat failed to exercise his franchise in the election of Municipal Corporation of Dehradun due to absence of his name in the voter list, the senior Congress leader said. Rawat said that he felt bad for not being part of the election process of the ULB polls in the State.
“Today for the first time in my life I decided to cast my vote before having my breakfast. I wanted to see whether the enthusiasm being witnessed during the campaigning is being reflected in the voting. I was shocked when I was told that my name is missing from the voter list of ward number 76. Then I thought that since I have changed my address to Defence Colony which is in ward number 58, my name should be in the voter list of this ward. But my name was missing from this list as well,’’ he said.
Rawat said that he has got information that names of a large number of people especially Dalits, backwards and minorities were missing from the voter lists. The former CM said that he should have remained alert and said that in the future, he will request the people to check the voter lists before the elections.
The chief spokesperson of Uttarakhand Congress Garima Dasauni, whose name was also missing from the voter list said that fearing defeat the BJP deliberately omitted names of people from the voter lists in a selective manner. She said the State Election Commissioner Sushil Kumar should come out and inform the people about the absence of such a large number of people from voter lists.
