Villagers boycott voting, seek exit from municipal area

PNS | DEHRADUN

Residents of Kesarwala village which falls in the ward number 66 Raipur under the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun, boycotted voting in the local body election on Thursday. The protesting villagers alleged that public representatives had ignored their issues consistently, adding that they will be better off in the Panchayat system than under the municipal corporation. The district officials reached the village and talked to the protesting villagers about their issues. The authorities said that voting had commenced at Kesarwala.

One of the protesting villagers, Surat Singh Negi said that the village is surrounded by forests on three sides and the villagers have to walk a couple of kilometres due to the absence of a road. He said, “The authorities have ignored our problems for the past 12 years. There is no logic in our village being part of the municipal ward. We want to be part of the Panchayat system,” he said. Negi further alleged that voters from nearby areas had been listed in the village. Apart from such voters who had cast their votes, most of the villagers had refrained from casting their vote, he claimed.
