The recent elections of urban local bodies (ULB) in the State has proved to be a mixed bag in terms of success for the opposition Congress party.
The party suffered a huge defeat in the elections of 11 municipal corporations where it failed to win even one seat. In the elections of ULB held in the year 2018, the mayoral candidates of Congress party were able to win in Kotdwar and Haridwar municipal corporations. However this time the BJP secured a thumping victory as its candidates won in 10 out of 11 municipal corporations.
In Srinagar, a BJP rebel registered victory over the official candidate of BJP and Congress was relegated to third position. Though Congress suffered a crushing defeat in the ULB elections held in the major cities, its candidates performed better in the small towns. In the elections held in 43 municipal councils, BJP candidates registered victories in 17 while Congress bagged 12 seats. The independents won in 13 seats. Similarly in 45 nagar panchayats the BJP, Congress and independents won 15 seats each.
The performance of Congress was better in the districts such as Chamoli and Pauri where it was able to capture more ULBs than its rival BJP.
The vice president of Uttarakhand Congress Suryakant Dhasmana told The Pioneer that the Congress party’s performance was at par with the ruling BJP in the mountainous parts of the State in the recent ULB polls. He said that the party performed well in the districts of Chamoli and Pauri despite lagging in resources. Dhasmana said that the party will conduct an in-depth review of its performance in the all 100 ULBs of the State.
