Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait reached Haridwar on Saturday and talked to former MLA Pranav Singh Champion’s wife Devyani Singh as part of his effort to resolve the ongoing dispute between the former MLA and Khanpur MLA Umesh Kumar.
Tikait met the former MLA’s wife and supporters at Damkothi, after which he went to meet Champion at the Roshnabad jail where he is under judicial custody. The two reportedly had a detailed conversation there. In a live video, Tikait said that both sides should listen to the responsible members of society, adding that there is no use in taking the dispute forward as it will only add to tensions in society. He said that both sides should forget the past and stop trying to denigrate the other side.
Tikait then left late in the evening for Dehradun to meet the Khanpur MLA. It is expected that a solution to the dispute may be arrived at after his talk with Kumar. It will be recalled that insults traded by the two politicians on social media for some days escalated on January 26 when rounds were fired by the former MLA and his supporters at Kumar’s Roorkee residence. The two were arrested by the police and the court sent Champion to judicial custody while Kumar secured bail.
