Uttarakhand ranked 23rd in road accident statistics

Uttarakhand ranks 23rd in the country in terms of road accident statistics and about 80 per cent of accidents occur in Dehradun, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar and Nainital districts.
The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said this during the official inauguration of 35th Road Safety Month at the Police Line here on Monday. He said that in 2024 alone, the country recorded 1.8 lakh deaths due to road accidents, with nearly 30,000 of these fatalities attributed to the absence of helmets.
According to him, 66 per cent of those who lost their lives in road accidents were between the ages of 18 and 34 years. Singh said that Uttarakhand has also witnessed a steady increase in road accidents, with expert studies revealing that nearly 90 per cent of these incidents result from human negligence. Rash driving, overspeeding, driving in the wrong direction, overtaking, overloading and driving under the influence of alcohol are among the primary causes of accidents.
According to official data, Uttarakhand records an average of four road accidents daily, resulting in three fatalities and five injuries. The State ranks 23rd in the country in terms of road accident statistics, the SSP said. He stated that to curb road accidents, the Police department has planned a series of awareness and enforcement activities throughout Road Safety Month. “This year, the campaign will focus on raising awareness among the youth, with initiatives such as street plays and various public engagement programmes aimed at educating citizens about traffic rules and road safety. Dehradun police will conduct a series of workshops and lectures across schools, colleges and higher educational institutions from February 3 to February 15,” he said.
The police also destructed180 modified silencers, which had been seized by police during inspections.
