The Rudrapur municipal commissioner Naresh Chandra Durgapal has fallen victim to cyber fraud, with cybercriminals siphoning off approximately Rs 1.84 lakh from his bank account. Following his complaint, the police have registered a case against an unidentified individual and have started an investigation.
According to the officials, the investigations revealed that the fraudsters used malware software to gain unauthorised access to the mobile number linked to the commissioner’s bank account. By intercepting SMS notifications, they carried out financial transactions without his knowledge. The officials said that in the complaint filed with the police, the commissioner stated that on February 7, an unknown person accessed his phone without authorisation and withdrew Rs 1.55 lakh and Rs 29,000 from two different bank accounts.
According to the police complaint, the fraudsters first installed malware on his mobile device and then transferred the registered bank number to another unauthorised device. Expressing concern over potential future fraud, the commissioner also reported the matter to the national cyber helpline in 1930. The officials said that the police have registered a case under relevant sections and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
