The police detained the former MLA of Ghansali Bhimlal Arya on Tuesday as he had reportedly managed to cross the barricades and reach the main gate of the Vidhan Sabha building while demonstrating for land law reforms in Uttarakhand on the first day of the Vidhan Sabha budget session on Tuesday.
Officials informed that Arya reached the Vidhan Sabha building gate in the morning and began raising slogans demanding changes to the land laws. Security personnel at the site attempted to control the situation but he managed to cross the barricades and reach the main gate of the building before the Governor’s address. However, the police took him into custody before he could stage a sit-in protest. The police also detained Arya’s supporters and took them away. Following this incident, the police increased security measures to prevent entry of any protester inside the building during the session.
Meanwhile, several organisations including guerrilla trained volunteers, Rashtriyavadi National Party, Akhil Bharatiya Kisan Sabha and others also protested against the government at the police barricade near Vidhan Sabha building. Strict land laws, justice for Ankita Bhandari and boycott of Uniform Civil Code (UCC) were among the main demands of the protestors. Besides this, many commuters had to face difficulty due to route diversion and barriers, especially near Haridwar Bypass and Rispana bridge. However, the traffic in the other parts of the city was not affected significantly.
The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said that the police made adjustments to the barriers around the Vidhan Sabha building area to facilitate smoother movement for the public. He claimed that compared to earlier arrangements, the police modified barriers to allow easier access, ensuring that school vehicles and the general public can pass through without inconvenience.
Besides this, the police also introduced a sliding barrier near the LIC building on Haridwar Road to manage the traffic there more effectively. The SSP said that this arrangement ensures that, even during demonstrations, the route remains accessible to the public. The movement through this barrier was restricted during such events. The modifications are intended to balance public convenience with security measures, he added.
