The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Karan Mahara has said that the provision of live-in relationship in Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is against the culture and dignity of Uttarakhand. Addressing a press conference at the State headquarters of Congress on Tuesday, the PCC president said that the Congress party opposes the live-in relationship provision in the UCC. He said that the party will seek the opinion of the general public on the issue and draft a memorandum to the President of India. Mahara threatened that the Congress party will hold a Vidhan Sabha protest march against the live-in relationship provision in the UCC on February 20.
Mahara said that the provision in UCC enabling outsiders to apply for live-in relationship registration after residing in the State for one year is a conspiracy to make them residents of Uttarakhand. He said that the live-in relationship provision in UCC is an effort to spread adultery in Uttarakhand.
The State president of Mahila Congress, Jyoti Rautela said that the UCC provision on live-in relationships will affect women more. She said that a large number of Mahila Congress members will join the protest march to Vidhan Sabha on the subject.
Senior advocate VS Khurana said that UCC is not the priority of Uttarakhand and that it is an attempt to divert the attention from the real issues.
