With the board examinations for class X and XII underway, doctors have advised that students should refrain from consuming fast food, as it may adversely affect their concentration levels during study sessions. A nutritious and well-balanced diet, along with adequate rest, is essential for helping students effectively engage with their coursework. Doctors emphasised the importance of a healthy diet in supporting students in achieving favourable outcomes during their examinations.

The deputy medical superintendent at the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC), Dr NS Bisht said that the board examination plays a crucial role in a student’s academic journey. However, he said that both students and their parents often experience confusion regarding optimal dietary choices during this critical period. Consuming excessively heavy meals can lead to drowsiness and gastrointestinal discomfort, which could hinder academic performance. Therefore, students must adhere to a healthy dietary plan throughout their board examinations. He said that it is essential to incorporate a high-protein diet while avoiding fatty foods during this period. Additionally, students should include fruits such as papaya, apples and bananas to maintain their health and fitness throughout the board examinations. Students should not overlook or skip meals due to their demanding study schedules. Stating that students often consume coffee during examinations to fend off drowsiness, he said that this is inadvisable since coffee can have detrimental effects on the heart. He also stressed the importance of getting adequate sleep, as this will help in recalling information during the exam, while also recommending the avoidance of fast food.

“In addition to a proper diet, engaging in physical activity can significantly contribute to students achieving high marks in examinations. During their study periods, students should take breaks of 15 to 20 minutes to engage in music, sports or any form of physical activity to help relax their minds. The relaxed mind assists students in grasping concepts more easily during their studies and recalling information effortlessly during examinations,” stated, dietician at GDMC Dr Richa Kukreti.

She further emphasised that to enhance their memory for the board examinations, students should incorporate soaked dried fruits into their daily diets. Include fresh fruits but advised against consuming coffee during the exam period, as it can adversely affect students’ internal health, potentially leading to constipation, which may pose challenges during examinations. She advised them to avoid fast food and street food to improve concentration levels.
