In latest news from Uttarakhand, Kumaun University authority freed its campus and its DSB campus from 17 encroachments-15 in the former and two in the latter, an action that triggered protest from the locals.
As the team, entrusted with the operation, faced opposition from the locals, it had to go back after pulling down just two unauthorised constructions in DSB campus.
Sharing information, the KU’s registrar Mangal Singh Mandrawal said that some people, including retired employees from KU and its DSB campuses, had encroached upon the university land which prompted the university administration to issue repeated notices to remove these. “Despite this, no encroacher removed encroachment. Despite repeated warnings, when retired employees and other people did not remove their encroachment, we went for the removal drive,” he added. A number of professors like M C Joshi, Neeta Bora Sharma, Harish Bisht and Seema Chauhan were present.
The people who were at the receiving end of the demolition drive alleged that they had been evicted sans notice from the lands they have been living for generations.
