Mana avalanche- four dead, five trapped & 50 rescued so far

A total of 50 out of 55 Border Roads Organisation (BRO) labourers trapped in an avalanche at Mana in Chamoli district were rescued by Saturday evening. According to Army sources, four of the injured labourers have died. The rescue operation is continuing to trace and rescue the five remaining labourers.

Following the avalanche which occurred early on Friday morning near Mana, the Army and other agencies have been carrying out the search and rescue operation which continued despite inclement weather on Friday. It was initially reported that 57 workers were trapped but it was later ascertained that two workers were on leave on the day of the incident. Thirty two out of the 55 trapped workers had been rescued by Friday evening with the total number of rescued workers reaching 50 by Saturday. Out of the 50 workers resued, four injured men have died, Army sources said.

Even as the Army and ITBP continued the operation to trace and rescue the five remaining workers, one of the rescued workers was shifted by helicopter to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Rishikesh. Meanwhile, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and senior Army officials also visited the affected area to review the damage and the ongoing operation.
