The chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR), Geeta Khanna will continue in her role till the government appoints a new eligible person to the position. Stating this, Khanna informed that her tenure as chairperson had ended earlier this year; however, no new eligible person has been appointed to take over the responsibility. Consequently, the authorities have decided that she will remain in her role and continue performing the commission’s duties till a new chairperson is appointed. She emphasised that during this temporary extension, she will responsibly manage all her duties.
Additionally, Khanna informed that after starting her temporary extension, she directed the Chief Education Officer (CEO) of Dehradun to take strict action against schools charging excessive admission application fees. She said that she recently received information indicating that some private schools in Dehradun are imposing excessive fees during admission. Taking this matter seriously, she as the chairperson of SCPCR has written a letter to the CEO, instructing that a detailed investigation be conducted by forming an inquiry committee. Apart from this, she asked that information regarding the admission application fees and other charges collected by the schools be compiled and a report be submitted. If any irregularities are found post-investigation, strict action should be taken against the schools, as per the rules, she said.
It will be recalled that recently the chairperson of the Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW), Kusum Kandwal has been similarly directed to continue in her role till a new person is appointed by the government. According to the officials, Kandwal’s term as chairperson expired on January 6, 2025. However, since that time, no new appointment has been made to the position.
