Shining Star school wins national award for sustainability education

The Shining Star school in the Ramnagar area has been spearheading biodiversity and sustainability education in the school and surrounding communities. Its efforts towards ushering sustainability education has been recently recognised by the Wipro Foundation with the prestigious Earthian National Award. Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also acknowledged the achievement and appreciated the school for its efforts.

School director Devendra Singh Negi said that a team of students comprising Rashi Tiwari, Jagrat Tiwari, Anshika Negi and Ankita Rajwar guided by their teacher mentor Sarita Negi worked together to develop practical action-driven solutions for waste management by promoting source segregation and use of cloth and paper bags to replace single-use plastics. They also worked on composting solutions for their school and families associated with the school. These students and teachers have been mentored by Nature Science Initiative (NSI), Dehradun for the past two years. Over 40 students have worked with NSI’s programmes for sustainable lifestyles under the guidance of their teachers. Recently these students and teachers have been working for raising awareness within surrounding communities around eco-bricking, sustainable menstruation health choices and meaningful consumption.  Student Kritika Rana said, “Sustainable living is not a natural trait for modern societies, but can become a habit”.
