Ahead of the New Year celebration, the Transport department issued challan to a total of 227 vehicles for over-speeding in Dehradun, Haridwar, Tehri and Uttarkashi districts. The regional transport officer (Enforcement and Road Safety), Dehradun Division, Anita Chamola said that the Transport department had launched a special campaign to address over-speeding and drunk driving. “This initiative aimed to ensure the safety of tourists and the locals and reduce accidents during the NY celebration,” she added.
As part of the drive, a total of 830 vehicles and drivers were inspected across the mentioned districts. Of these, 227 vehicles were challaned for overspeeding and 25 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of drugs. These drivers were handed over to the police and their vehicles were issued challans and seized, she said.
Chamola added that the fitness certificates of two buses had been cancelled due to their poor mechanical and physical condition, which posed safety risks. She added that licenses of the drivers would be cancelled in case they would be found driving under the influence of intoxicants.
Haridwar district saw the highest number of challans issued during the drive. Specifically, action was taken against 22 drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol and 118 vehicles were issued challans for over-speeding.
