Two infants in Faridabad narrowly escaped death after accidentally inhaling food particles that blocked their airways, triggering life-threatening respiratory failure. Both children were rushed to Amrita Hospital on Makar Sankranti in critical condition.
The first child, aged one year and three months, had suffered a cough and breathing difficulty for a week. Emergency bronchoscopy revealed a peanut completely blocking his right main airway, cutting off air to the lung. Doctors removed it in time and the child recovered rapidly.
Hours later, an eight-month-old baby arrived with oxygen saturation at just 40 per cent. A foreign object lodged deep in the lung was removed using advanced cryotherapy during an emergency procedure. The infant required intensive care before stabilising.
Doctors warned that foreign body aspiration in infants is often fatal if delayed. They urged parents to avoid giving small foods like peanuts, closely supervise feeding and seek immediate medical care for persistent coughing or breathing difficulty.
