Police arrested the accused of the murder of a woman in Rishikesh on Saturday night. The victim, Preeti Rawat had worked as an assistant at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The incident occurred on the night of January 31 in Shivajinagar, where she had been living on rent. The accused-identified as 40-year-old Suresh Gupta- was arrested from Chhutmalpur in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh.
According to the police, the woman who had divorced her husband a few years ago was living alone in Rishikesh. During the COVID period, she had first met Gupta while working at a shop in Rishikesh. Their friendship had later deepened into a love relationship. With talks of their marriage doing the rounds, disputes had started in Gupta’s family.
As a condition for marriage, Preeti and her family had insisted on Gupta acquiring property in Rishikesh. Subsequently, the accused had sold all his ancestral property in Laksar, Haridwar, for Rs 35 lakh and begun looking for a house in Rishikesh to live with Preeti.
However, as he failed to find a good property, distance started developing between the accused and Preeti and the accused remained stressed. Police believe that due to stress, the accused committed the crime.
