Woman arrested for begging at Tehsil Chowk in Dehradun

A woman was arrested by the police in Dehradun for begging and causing traffic disruption at Tehsil Chowk on Saturday. The action was taken during a special checking drive against begging, child labour and suspicious persons.
According to the police, a police team was on patrol duty when they saw a woman knocking on windows of cars and asking for money at the traffic signal near Tehsil Chowk. “Vehicle drivers were facing inconvenience and the traffic movement was being affected by her actions,” said an officer.
During questioning, the woman identified herself as Gulabo (58) from Kaithal district in Haryana. She told the police that she was living in Dehradun and surviving by begging. Police officials said that the woman had been warned several times against begging in public places in the past.
The police arrested the woman under Sections 9(1) and 10(1) of the Uttar Pradesh Beggary Prevention Act, 1975. She was later taken to Kotwali Nagar Police Station for further legal action. During a search at the police station, officers found Rs 1,185 cash from her bag. The cash was returned to her after the checking.
