Drunken brawl: Forest worker hacked to death by another worker

A 50-year-old plantation worker, employed on contract with the Forest department, was hacked to death by another contract worker with a hatchet in the Tanda forest area of Haldwani late Friday night. The brutality of the murder has sent shock waves across the State with the police suspecting it having resulted from drunken brawl. The deceased was identified as Meva Lal, a resident of Kaushambi, Uttar Pradesh. The accused, Tiwari Singh fled the scene after the incident.

Upon receiving the information, police teams from Haldwani Kotwali police station and TP Nagar police outpost arrived at the scene, took possession of the body and sent it for post-mortem. Police said that they had both been inebriated during the incident.
The eyewitnesses said that with heated arguments going on, Tiwari Singh, in a sudden fit of rage, had picked up an axe lying nearby and hacked Meva Lal in his neck repeatedly.

Speaking of the murder, the Kotwali police station in-charge, Vijay Mehta said that prima facie the case appeared to be one of drunken altercation. “A murder case has been registered against the accused, Tiwari Singh. Police teams are raiding all possible hideouts to arrest him. He will be arrested soon,” he added.
