In a road accident late Thursday night on the Haldwani-Lalkuan National Highway, a speeding truck, coming from the wrong side, hit two friends riding a bike.
A 15-year-old class XII student identified as Siddharth died on the spot, while his friend Ayan was seriously injured. The impact of the collision was so severe that the bike caught fire and was completely gutted.
As per police sources, the accident occurred near Gorapadav at around 9 PM on Thursday when the two friends were returning home from Haldwani market. The people present at the scene immediately called the police and ambulance.
Siddharth was the grandson of a former chairman of the Lalkuan Nagar Panchayat.
Meanwhile, the seriously injured Ayan was rushed to Dr Sushila Tiwari Hospital in a critical condition, His condition remained critical, doctors said.
Police have impounded the truck and launched an investigation, searching for the absconding driver.
