The Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) has taken cognisance of a serious incident in Rishikesh where a son allegedly shot his mother for preventing him from consuming drugs. Expressing deep anguish over the incident, the USCW chairperson Kusum Kandwal announced a large-scale awareness campaign to combat illegal drug abuse across the State, starting in Rishikesh.

Notably, the drug-addict Sumit Gaur allegedly shot his 63-year-old mother, Usha Devi, in the head from a pistol. Following the incident, she was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh in critical condition.

Kandwal said she had spoken to the superintendent of police, Rishikesh, directing that the strictest legal measures be taken against the perpetrator immediately.  “I will also visit the hospital and meet the mother of the drug-addict,” she said, adding that the incident was a blow to the values sustaining family and society.

She further said that they would launch a major campaign against the drug abuse menace. “ The commission will collaborate with local police to engage women throughout the state in this special campaign. It will reach every city, town and village,” she added.
