The Seed Bomb Campaign week- 2026 will be held from July 9 to 15 with an aim to conserve the environment, increase green cover and encourage public participation in such efforts. Forest minister Subodh Uniyal is slated to inaugurate the campaign which has its roots in Uttarakhand, from where it has now spread to various States.
According to Dwarika Prasad Semwal, who started the campaign in Uttarakhand, the seed bomb campaign is now conducted by the public in various States according to the local climate, geographical conditions and available tree species. This campaign has now taken the shape of a public movement which brings together a large number of nature lovers, students, voluntary organisations and social bodies who actively participate in the plantation drive. In Uttarakhand, the campaign will be formally launched by Forest minister Subodh Uniyal on Wednesday in the presence of Forest department officials, environmentalists, social workers and volunteers involved in the campaign. Forest officials of all the districts will participate in the event virtually.
Semwal said that making a seed bomb is not complicated. “One first needs to properly knead fertile soil and quality compost using water. Two seeds of trees suitable to the local climate and conditions are placed inside a small ball made from the mixture of soil and compost. This ‘seed bomb’ should be dried in the shade for at least four days, after which these can be placed or scattered in the area marked for plantation. With rain and conducive climate, the seed sprouts and eventually grows into a tree,” he said.
