Heavy rain exposes monsoon preparations in Haridwar

Haridwar was affected by waterlogging, subsidence and damage to homes due to the first heavy rain spell witnessed here on Thursday. The locals said that the damage caused by the rain has exposed the monsoon preparations in Haridwar. The Haridwar district magistrate Mayur Dixit visited the affected areas and checked waterlogging and relief works.

A culvert on the Haridwar-Najibabad route in the Gaindikhata area was hit by subsidence due to which a roadways bus got stuck. The locals questioned the quality of construction and demanded an inquiry in the matter. A number of homes were reportedly damaged due to deep excavation near an under construction overhead water tank at Purusharthi market near the Haridwar railway station. The police and rescue teams reached the site to rescue the affected people. The locals alleged negligence in the construction works and sought adequate compensation from the authorities. Two milk trucks and one SUV were stuck on the road at Bhupatwala due to subsidence at the site of sewer line construction works. The road was blocked for some hours due to this issue. In the Jwalapur area, the rain resulted in waterlogging in the Sandeshnagar colony. The residents said that they had been complaining about this problem from the level of the district magistrate to the chief minister portal but the issue has not been resolved so far.

The district disaster management officials informed on Thursday that Laksar had witnessed 180 millimetres rain during the past 24 hours while there was 160 millimetres in Roorkee, 122 millimetres in Haridwar, 115 millimetres in Roshanabad and 45 millimetres in Bhagwanpur.
