There is no dearth of talent in the nation but those who recognise it are few. All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Guwahati president and orthopaedic surgeon Dr BKS Sanjay said, “There is no lack of diamonds in our nation but the jewellers who recognise the value of diamonds are fewer. Science is a vital part of life but many don’t understand its importance. I believe that the real benefit of science and technology is derived only when it reaches the last man in society. Research, innovation and technological development should make a person’s life simple, safe, healthy and respectable. A tool is not considered important till its benefit reaches the people,” he said.

Recalling one of his past works, he said how he had innovated for reimplantation of an autoclaved tumour bone graft. A cancerous bone was removed and the infected part was removed before reimplanting the bone, he said. Sanjay said that a young girl was brought by her parents with the daughter suffering from bone cancer with other doctors recommending amputation of a leg. He recalled how removed six inches of her tibia and autoclaved the infected part to prevent amputation of the leg.

Sanjay also exhorted the gathering to realise the strength of the self, adding that proper behaviour, knowledge and skill will ensure success in all endeavours.
