26-year-old teacher dies, mother alleges dowry harassment

A 26-year-old woman, who was working as a teacher at a government school, died under suspicious circumstances at her in-law’s house in the Harrawala area of Dehradun on Wednesday nearly eight months after the marriage. The deceased has been identified as Srishti Kandari. Her mother lodged a dowry harassment
complaint at Doiwala police station following which a case was registered against her husband Saurabh Ratudi, who is working as a private secretary at the State Secretariat, mother-in-law Parveena Devi and sister-in-law Charu. According to Doiwala circle officer, Vandana Verma, the case has been registered under Section 80(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
In her complaint, the deceased woman’s mother Seema Kandari alleged that her daughter was mentally and physically harassed by her husband and in-laws which began soon after her marriage.
The mother alleged that her daughter had told her about the harassment several times. Besides, she was mentally tortured with her husband and other family members blaming her for any illness and death that happened to the family.
Speaking of the matter, the CO Verma said the investigation would be conducted on the basis of the post-mortem report, forensic and other technical evidence. “Police will take further legal action based on the findings of the investigation,” she added.
