PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE / Dehradun

A 21-year-old man was found dead in a roadside drain in the Majra area of Dehradun late on Friday night. The deceased was identified as Amit Semwal, son of Rameshwar Prasad and a resident of Majra. This is the second fatal drain related incident in Dehradun in two days. On Thursday, two young sisters were swept away in a seasonal nala after heavy rain and later died, raising fresh concerns over public safety during the monsoon. Semwal’s body was recovered from the drain at around 12:45 AM after the police control room received information about it. Police circle officer (Sadar) Ankit Kandari said that the body was later sent for post-mortem examination. Semwal worked in the canteen of a private school near Shimla Bypass. He had left the canteen at around 7 PM and was walking home to Majra. However, he did not reach home and his family was unable to contact him. His parents had been searching for him after he went missing.

Kandari said that the initial investigation suggests that Semwal accidentally fell into the drain while returning home and was swept away by the flowing water, leading to his death. However, the police are investigating the exact circumstances of the incident. CCTV footage from the nearby area is also being examined to find out what happened before the incident.
