Party workers led by the Uttarakhand Mahila Congress president Jyoti Rautela staged a protest at the district magistrate’s office here on Saturday against the lathicharge on a students’ gathering at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, the State’s crumbling education system, increasing attacks on democratic rights and other issues concerning the future of the youth.
They demanded an apology from the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and resignation of the Union Home Minister Amit Shah in connection with the assault on the youths in Delhi. Addressing the gathering, Rautela said that the lathi charge and use of pellet guns on the students at Jantar Mantar amounted to a direct attack on democracy. “Voicing one’s view is a constitutional right, but the Centre seems bent on gagging democratic dissent by all means. PM Modi’s statement on this matter has further hurt the sentiments of students and youth across the country,” she said.
She further said that democratic governance warranted an apology from Modi and immediate resignation of Shah in view of the sensitivity involved in the matter.
