A major cybercrime has come to light in Ramnagar, with 35 bank accounts at Punjab & Sind Bank being reportedly found linked to 129 cyber fraud cases registered across different states of the country.
Notably, a sub-inspector (SI) had lodged a complaint in the case and an FIR was registered on the basis of his complaint.
As per the police sources, the 35 suspicious accounts came under the scanner after information was received through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and the cyber cell. Preliminary investigation indicated that cyber fraud cases reported from different parts of the country have financial links with transactions carried out through these accounts.
“We are now examining the transactions of all 35 account holders. Their businesses, occupations, financial status and other details are also being verified thoroughly to ascertain whether the accounts were used by the account holders themselves or by others involved in cybercrimes,” a police officer, privy to the details, said.
Police further said that the role of the bank and its employees is also being examined. Investigators are checking whether proper documents and KYC-related formalities were followed by the bank employees when the 35 accounts were opened. “The transactions conducted through these accounts since their opening are also being scrutinised,” informed the Ramnagar police station in-charge, Sushil Kumar.
The first suspicious account reportedly came to light in the name of a business establishment in Pirumadara village. Police found that money allegedly linked to a cyber fraud case had been credited to the account. Following this, other suspicious accounts were also brought under investigation.
“A major revelation is expected once the investigation into the suspicious accounts and their links with cyber fraud cases is completed,” added Kumar.
