The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Dehradun branch office, organised a hallmarking awareness programme for jewellers in Bijnor in which about 80 jewellers and their representatives participated. Vishnu Gopal Agarwal and Akhil Agarwal of the Sarafa Association, Bijnor, were also present.
In the programme, director and head of BIS Dehradun, Hemant B Aade and hallmarking officer Sachin Chaudhary provided important information to the jewellers regarding the new provisions made in the hallmarking system, HUID and consumer interests.
The BIS officials stated that Bijnor is now among the districts with mandatory hallmarking. Therefore, all jewellers in the district should obtain their BIS Jeweller Registration immediately. They added that BIS Jeweller Registration is completely free, valid for life and the registration process can be completed in approximately two minutes.
To facilitate jewellers’ registration, BIS will organise a special a camp in Bijnor. At the camp, BIS officers and staff will assist jewellers in completing the registration process on the spot.
Aade stated that the BIS Care app now provides photos and weight information of hallmarked gold jewellery. “This will allow consumers to verify the details of their purchased jewellery which will boost transparency and consumer confidence in jewellery purchases,” he added.
Chaudhary stated that a six-digit HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) system has also been implemented for hallmarked silver jewellery. “Consumers can verify the authenticity of the HUID through the BIS Care app,” he said, adding that the minimum purity for hallmarked silver jewellery with HUID is 800 PPT.
