Uttarakhand director general of police Deepam Seth on Tuesday here directed the police and intelligence units to strengthen security across the state ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, Kumbh Mela and major religious festivals.

Seth asked officers to focus on counter terrorism and implement “Prahar”, the national anti-terrorism policy, at the ground level. He also directed district police to remain alert over inputs about Pakistani gangster Shahzad Bhatti allegedly trying to radicalise youths through social media.

The DGP asked the state Anti-Terrorism Squad to study successful operations of police forces in major states and improve its own operations. He also stressed the need to strengthen the security of the Uttarakhand chief minister in view of the upcoming Assembly elections and the increasing security concerns.

Special attention was ordered in districts bordering China and Nepal. A high-level coordination meeting involving the ITBP, SSB, Army, Intelligence Bureau, state police and ATS will be organised to check suspicious activities, infiltration and the movement of anti-national elements.

The meeting also reviewed security arrangements for the ongoing Char Dham Yatra and upcoming Kumbh Mela. Police were told to arrange manpower, technical equipment and other resources in advance.

The DGP further ordered 24-hour monitoring of social media platforms during the election period, Kumbh and religious events. “Police will check quick fact-checks against rumours, misleading news, edited videos and deep fakes that could affect law and order,” he added.
