PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun
The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has launched another monkey trapping drive across the city following complaints from residents about increasing monkey activity in residential areas. Nine monkeys have been caught since the three-day exercise began on September 30.
The senior municipal veterinary officer, Dr Varun Aggarwal said that the monkeys were caught from Ladpur, Ranjhawala, Tehri House in Rajpur, NIVH on September 30. “The team went to Osho Ashram in Clement Town, GRD Niranjanpur on Thursday to trap monkeys. The corporation has also placed cages at GMS Farm at GMS Road,” he added.
The latest drive comes amid recurring complaints from residents about monkeys straying into residential areas, damaging property and creating nuisance for people, particularly children and elderly residents.
The MCD had undertaken trapping exercises in response to such complaints in the past as well, with the civic body continuing to deploy cages in areas reporting monkey activity.
“The cages installed now would also be shifted or placed at other locations based on fresh complaints,” Aggarwal added.
The monkeys caught during the drive will be released in the Lachhiwala and Asharodi forest ranges upon completing the necessary procedures.
MCD has urged residents to report areas where monkey activity is causing problems so that cages can be placed and the monkeys captured accordingly.
