The Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety chairman Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre has arrived in Dehradun to review road safety measures being taken in Uttarakhand. According to officials, he will hold a meeting with top officials of the State on Monday.

The meeting will be attended by chief secretary, director general of police, additional director general of police, secretary Transport, Finance, Public Works Department, Education and Health secretaries along with senior departmental officers.

Discussion will mainly be on the condition of crash barriers, black spots, accident-prone areas, improvement of intersections, road traffic signs and road markings, officials said. They said that factors like overspeeding, overloading, driving in the wrong direction, not wearing a seat belt, not using a helmet, using a mobile phone while driving and driving by minor children will also be checked.

Special emphasis will be laid on the PM Relief Scheme. Till now this year, only 36 cases have been reported in the State under the scheme, in which 19 have been able to get the facility of cashless treatment. From January to August, 1,626 people have been injured in accidents, officials informed.

There is a provision to provide cashless treatment for one week to all road accident victims in empanelled hospitals. Apart from empanelled hospitals, any injured person can be given free treatment for 48 hours in any hospital under this scheme. Arrangements for quick reimbursement to hospitals have been made so that no hospital hesitates in providing treatment to road accident victims.
