A family in Dehradun allegedly lost Rs 6.7 lakh in an online insurance fraud after an unidentified woman posed as an insurance agent and persuaded an elderly man to buy a policy. The Rajpur police registered an FIR on Sunday after the family discovered the alleged fraud when the woman demanded another Rs 90,000 to complete the insurance process.
As per the complaint filed by Kirti Gaunyal, an unidentified woman contacted her grandfather Harish Chandra Gaunyal on January 16 offering an insurance policy from a company identified in the complaint as Shri Ishares. The woman allegedly introduced herself as Swati Mishra and described several benefits of the policy.
The complainant alleged that her grandfather agreed to buy the policy and that payments were subsequently made through UPI from her bank account on different dates until July 27.
On October 21, the woman allegedly demanded an additional Rs 90,000, claiming that the payment was necessary to complete the policy. This raised the family’s suspicions. After checking the account, they discovered that the money had already been transferred.
The grandfather had also reported the matter through the national cybercrime helpline, 1930. The Rajpur police registered the case under Section 66D of the Information Technology Act and Sections 318(4) and 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Further investigation is underway to identify the accused, police said.
