SCPCR directs SDM to investigate against unlawful confectionery

Stating that no action has been taken so far by officials even after complaining to the Dehradun district administration regarding the illegal operation of some confectioners in the basement of a bank by a member of special juvenile police unit (SJPU), the SCPCR chairperson Usha Negi has directed the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) to take cognisance of the matter.

The State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) recently received a complaint from a member of SJPU of Dehradun district stating that some confectioners have started to make sweets in the basement of a local bank in Vasant Vihar area which is in fact a parking area. The confectioners there also employ children as labourers to work in several large furnaces, wrote the complainant in the letter. According to him, such large furnaces can lead to a severe accident and can be deadly for people living nearby too. Moreover, Negi informed that the complainant had brought the issue to the knowledge of the district magistrate in November too but no action has been taken yet. Taking cognisance of the issue, Negi has directed SDM of Dehradun to take appropriate action after proper investigation of the matter and has asked him to submit the report for the same within 15 days in the commission.
