Tusker found dead in Corbett landscape, electrocution suspected
The body of an elephant believed to have been electrocuted to death was found in the Bijrani range of Corbett tiger reserve on Sunday.
According to sources, the Bijrani ranger Rajkumar and his team reached Gaujani village area after receiving information about the body of an elephant in an agricultural field. The ranger informed that the body of a tusker was found in the farm of Gaujani resident Kailash Chandra Tiwari. The age of the elephant is estimated to be between 35 and 40 years. It is being suspected that the pachyderm died of electrocution as a light bulb was found stuck in its trunk. The ranger further informed that the farm owner had arranged an electricity connection in the farm to enable him to guard it. The senior departmental officials had been informed about the incident. The actual cause of the elephant’s death will be ascertained after the veterinarians conduct the post mortem. Meanwhile, as the area where the incident took place borders the Ampokhra range of the Terai west forest division, the officials concerned were discussing relevant aspects to ascertain the jurisdiction in the area where the elephant was found dead. However, the Ampokhra ranger Vipin Kumar said that the place where the elephant died is under the jurisdiction of the Corbett authorities and not Terai west forest division.
