MCD to impose penalties on single-use plastics from today

Gearing up to restrict the use of single-use plastics in the city once again, the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will start imposing penalties on those violating the ban on single-use plastics from today. The corporation initially started raising awareness against single-use plastic earlier this month through sanitation supervisors and by playing an audio message in garbage collection vehicles.

Municipal commissioner, Vinay Shankar Pandey disclosed that he had already formed five teams to raise awareness in the five zones of the city last week which will also execute raids on commercial establishments and plastic manufacturers from Monday. He said that the teams have seized single-use plastics and imposed fine in some establishments recently while simultaneously raising awareness among the locals. From March 1, MCD will impose penalties on every offender violating the ban on single-use plastic in the city, said Pandey. Moreover, the chief municipal health officer, Dr Kailash Joshi informed the MCD can impose fine ranging from Rs 100 to Rs five lakh as per the violation of an offender. He also added that products of thermocol items like cups, plates and glasses and single-use polypropylene carry bags are also banned by the State Government. Meanwhile, the field inspection for Swacch Survekshan 2021 is also due by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) this month in Dehradun and as per Joshi, the corporation will ensure the proper implementation of the plastic ban in the city.
