The experts at the All India Institute of Medical Research (AIIMS) Rishikesh here have advised the discharged patients of Mucormycosis to keep a control on their blood sugar levels. They warned that such patients had to be hospitalised again if sugar levels were not kept in check.
The director of AIIMS Rishikesh, Dr Ravi Kant said that people with sugar problems are at higher risk of Mucormycosis. “People who have been infected with Covid 19 should be serious about their sugar level. It is not necessary that patients, who have been discharged after getting treatment for Mucormycosis, cannot get infected again from the disease. If the sugar level in the blood increases, then Mucor fungus can again infect the same organs or other organs of the body,’’ he said.
The ENT Surgeon and Head of Mucor Treatment Team AIIMS, Dr Amit Tyagi explained that a patient of Mucormycosis has to be hospitalized for a minimum period of three to six weeks for treatment. He said that so far 126 Endoscopic surgeries, 92 Maxillectomy surgeries and 64 Orbital exenteration have been done in AIIMS.
During the second wave of Covid-19, there was a sudden increase in the cases of Mucormycosis in the month of May. Since then 348 patients of Mucormycosis were admitted and treated at the AIIMS Rishikesh.
