Girls do better; Delhi fares better than other States
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Friday declared the much-awaited Class 12 Board results which are being touted as the best results in the recent past with 99.37 per cent of the nearly 14 lakh students passing the exam.
With record-high pass percentage registered in all the Board results — CBSE, ICSE, other State Board — the cut-offs for college undergraduate admissions are likely to go up. This is also because nearly 5.3 per cent of students have scored above 95 per cent.
In terms of number, a total of 70,004 students have achieved 95 per cent and above marks, while 1,50,152 have scored in the 90-95 per cent range.
The Central Universities like Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Delhi University have already announced their dates for admission and for conduct of entrances in September as the academic session has to start by the end of October. The JEE and NEET admission process for engineering and medical institutions are already underway.
The results have been declared based on evaluation between the schools and CBSE after the conduct of the offline exams had to be cancelled amidst the second phase of coronavirus pandemic.
For an individual State, Delhi recorded the highest pass percentage of 99.84 per cent this year. The overall pass percentage of girls is 99.67 per cent, boys is 99.13 per cent and transgender is 100 per cent. Girls have done better than boys by 0.54 per cent.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a tweet said, “Congratulations to my young friends who have successfully passed their Class XII CBSE examinations. Best wishes for a bright, happy and healthy future.”
The batch which appeared for the Class XII Boards this year did so under unprecedented circumstances.
It is the first-ever result without exams. The mark sheets will be available for download at various authorised online platforms, including the Digilocker. While the ICSE declared both its Class 10 and 12 Board results last Saturday, the Class 10 results by CBSE will be declared on Monday.
The Prime Minister, who had personally announced the bold decision of cancellation of this year’s CBSE Board Exams followed by other national and State Education Boards, said, “To those who feel they could have worked harder or performed better, I want to say — learn from your experience and hold your head high. A bright and opportunity-filled future awaits you. Each of you is a powerhouse of talent. My best wishes always.”
“The education world witnessed many changes through the year gone by. Yet, they adapted to the new normal and gave their best. Proud of them,” Modi said in his message.
According to the information put out by the CBSE, this year, 99.37 pass percentage has been recorded which is nearly 10 per cent higher than previous year’s 88.8 per cent. In 2019, it was 83.4 per cent.
As many as 65,184 students have not received their results. Their results are still being processed and CBSE said it will announce their results on August 5.
CBSE Examinations Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj said the compartmental examinations will be conducted between August 16 and September 15. This year only 6,149 students are listed under the compartment category whereas last year, 87,650 students last year had a compartment.
The senior secondary exam results have been declared based on an alternative marking scheme that was decided by the Centre and approved by the Supreme Court. As per the Board’s 40:30:30 formula for evaluation of marks of Class 12 students, students have been assessed based on their Class 12, Class 11 and Class 10 marks.
According to the formula, the theory marks of each subject was computed using 40 per cent from the marks they got in the subject pre-boards or mid-term exams held by their schools earlier this year, 30 per cent from their Class 11 final exam marks, and 30 percent from their Class 10 board exam results. This has been added to the actual marks that they got in their Class 12 internal assessments and practicals for that subject.
CBSE officials said the students who are not satisfied with the manner of assessment or the marks will be allowed to sit for written examinations conducted by the Board by August end if the conditions are conducive for holding the examinations.
The Class 10 CBSE results are likely to be announced on Monday and the Board has adopted an alternative strategy to evaluate students without final exams. According to the alternate CBSE evaluation strategy, while 20 marks for each subject will be for internal assessment, 80 marks will be calculated based on students’ performance in various tests or exams throughout the year.
