Anganwadi workers warn of intense protest against State Govt

The members of the Anganwadi Workers Association have threatened to start an intense state-wide protest if the State government fails to increase the allowance of the Anganwadi workers soon as per the purported promise made by its representatives last year.

According to the president of the association, Rekha Negi, the Dehradun mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ visited the protest site of the Anganwadi workers last year as the representative of the then chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat and promised the workers that they will be given a raise in their allowances. However, Negi said that the government never even mentioned their demands and their two-month long protest.

“The mayor had also promised us to make a committee where we can present our issues but nothing is being done by the government. The women working as Anganwadi workers work tirelessly in the remote areas of Uttarakhand but they still do not get paid properly. Observing the negligence of the government here towards us, we have decided to revive our protest,” said Negi. She said that the Anganwadi workers in various districts staged a protest against the State government on Monday and demanded a monthly allowance of Rs 18,000.

“We also staged a protest in Dehradun and gave a memorandum to the additional district magistrate (ADM) for the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. We have also decided to gherao Vidhan Sabha building during the upcoming monsoon session and protest against the government. The government has given us nothing other than false assurances. The association will start a state-wide intense protest too if we will not receive any positive response from the government,”added disclosed Negi.
