The BJP party workers who were earlier agitated over the induction of former Pradesh Congress Committee president Kishore Upadhyaya into the BJP are finally coming to terms with it.
The party workers who were inactive earlier are back and Upadhyaya appears to have been successful in eliciting their support in the electoral contest from Tehri Assembly constituency.
Meanwhile, several members of other parties in the Tehri constituency have been joining the BJP and the organisation believes that Upadhyaya’s entry in the party will have an impact in six assembly segments of the Tehri district.
Upadhyaya, who was in the Congress for about 44 years, joined the BJP three days ago. Before he was declared the BJP candidate from Tehri constituency, some were of the opinion that he had taken the wrong step by joining the BJP. People believed that he would not be accepted by the BJP workers and there could be a rebellion-like situation within the party. However, on January 28, when Upadhyaya filed his nomination in New Tehri, all the local leaders of the party were seen supporting him. The next day, villagers, including dozens of Congress workers, left the party and joined the BJP in support of Upadhyaya in the Jakhnidhar area. Two dozen people took a pledge to strengthen his hands by taking membership of the BJP at Chamba on Sunday. Upadhyaya said that the development schemes of the Modi government at the Centre are benefiting the common man. He said that purification of Tehri politics, social purification, financial purification and strengthening the educational system are his priorities.
