Pulling up the state government for closure of the cardiac care unit run under PPP mode in the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay district (Coronation) hospital in Dehradun, the Uttarakhand high court has directed the state government to facilitate free treatment of cardiac patients in six prominent hospitals in Dehradun till the cardiac care unit resumes functioning in the district hospital. The State government had submitted the list of these six hospitals in the court. The division bench of acting chief justice Sanjaya Kumar Mishra and justice RC Khulbe issued the direction while hearing on a public interest litigation by Dehradun resident Satyaveer Singh.

The PIL had stated that the state government had handed over the cardiac unit in the district hospital under PPP mode to Fortis hospital. The agreement had ended on March 7, 2021 after which the government extended it to March 6, 2022. However, with the model code of conduct coming into force for the Assembly elections, the government was not able to finalise a new agreement due to which the cardiac unit was closed. The State government submitted a list of six hospitals where cardiac patients would be provided free treatment. In its order, the HC said that the free treatment of cardiac patients should be facilitated in these six hospitals by the government till the cardiac unit in the Dehradun district hospital resumes operations.
