Banking services were partially affected in Uttarakhand after employees of many banks went on strike on Monday on the call of a nationwide strike by the All India Bank Employees Union (AIBEU) and All India Bank Officers Association (AIBOA).
According to Vinay Kumar Sharma, joint secretary of Uttaranchal Bank Employ Union (UBEU), the bank employees are on strike to stage their protest against the privatisation of banks. “We also demand the restoration of old pension and regularisation of contract workers,” said Sharma. The banks were already closed on the weekend and the two-day strike in the last four days of the financial year is expected to severely affect transactions amounting to hundreds of crores of rupees. However, Sharma stated that since only certain banks and bank employees participated in the protest, transactions of only about Rs 150 crore were affected across the state which will possibly be the same on Tuesday too.
