Taking cognisance of a case in which a 14 year old girl was allegedly gang raped, the Uttarakhand high court has directed the Pithoragarh senior superintendent of police to provide round the clock security to the victim. Hearing the matter on Wednesday, the division bench of acting chief justice Sanjaya Kumar Mishra and justice RC Khulbe also directed the SSP to inspect the site of the alleged crime and submit his report to the court. The HC has also directed the investigation officer to submit the investigation progress report in the court. The police have also been directed to arrest two other accused in the case. The HC also asked the district administration why the case should not be referred to the crime branch. Taking a stern stance during the hearing, the court observed that despite this being a very serious case, the police did not act swiftly. The counsel representing the state government informed the court that the police have arrested four accused in the case. The other accused in the case are being investigated.
It is pertinent to mention here that the HC took cognisance of a complaint letter in which it was stated that on March 1, on the occasion of Shivratri, a Pithoragarh resident had lodged a police complaint about his 14 year old daughter going to the temple and not returning.
