The Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from Champawat Kailash Gehtodi resigned from his membership of Uttarakhand Assembly on Thursday. His resignation has ended the suspense on the assembly seat from which the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami would contest the by- election to enter the state assembly. Gehtodi submitted his resignation to the speaker of Uttarakhand assembly Ritu Khanduri at her residence. The speaker has accepted his resignation.
Accompanied the BJP’s Uttarakhand president Madan Kaushik, cabinet ministers Chandan Ram Das and Saurabh Bahuguna, BJP State general secretary (organisation) Ajey Kumar, Dehradun mayor Sunil Uniyal Gama, MLA Khajan Das and others, Gehtodi arrived at the Yamuna Colony residence of the speaker in the morning. Later talking to the media persons, the BJP State president Madan Kaushik said that the final decision on the resignation request of Gehtodi was taken on Wednesday following which he has resigned and his resignation has been accepted by the speaker. Kaushik congratulated Gehtodi for his decision and said that it has made him even more popular.
In the recently held assembly elections, CM Pushkar Singh Dhami had contested from his traditional Khatima assembly constituency of Udham Singh Nagar district. However he was defeated by Congress candidate Bhuwan Kapdi by a margin of 6,759 votes. Despite the reversal in Khatima, the ruling BJP came back to power in Uttarakhand by winning 47 out of 70 seats in the state assembly. The central leadership of BJP reposed faith in Dhami after which he became CM of the state for the second consecutive time. In order to fulfil the constitutional obligation of getting elected to the assembly within six months a safe seat was being scouted for him. The search has now ended with the resignation of Gehtodi. It is worth mentioning here that Gehtodi was the first MLA who had offered to vacate his seat for Dhami. Apart from Gehtodi many other MLAs have also offered their seats to Dhami. Gehtodi has won from Champawat seat in the year 2017 and 2022.
