People should own the government in a democracy- Pandey

Former chief secretary (CS) of Uttarakhand Indu Kumar Pandey has said that for the success of democracy it is important for the people to own the government. He was addressing a programme organised to mark the ‘National Civil Services day here on Thursday. Addressing a gathering of the students, teachers and others, the former CS said that many factors such as politics of vote bank distorts and others the ideal structure of democracy. He however added that with time the democracy in India will evolve further and develop. Pandey said that one feels optimistic for the future of the democracy and country due to increase in quality of education, spread of education and social empowerment. Talking on corruption in services, Pandey said that the economic theory of corruption proves that the corruption decreases when the penalties imposed on corrupt are more than the gains achieved from the corrupt practices. Giving the example of Finland, the former CS said that social boycott of corrupt people should be done.
The Additional Chief Executive Officer (ACEO) of Centre for Public Policy and Good Governance, Uttarakhand, Manoj Kumar Pant gave a detailed account of all the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to the students. He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given the mantra of minimum government maximum governance. The secretary women and child development H C Semwal welcomed the guests and threw light on the importance of the day. Senior PCS officer Lalit Mohan Rayal also addressed the students on the occasion.
The programme was attended by students and teachers of many schools of the city.
