Thousands face action under verification and Mariyada operations

The Uttarakhand police have so far taken action against thousands of people as part of the verification campaign and operation Mariyada- aimed at preventing objectionable activities at pilgrimage and other sacred spots across the state.
In view of the Char Dham Yatra set to start next month and to maintain law and order, the police started a verification campaign on April 21. The identities of those working and living in Uttarakhand for the past 10 years along with street vendors are being verified as part of this campaign. The police have so far undertaken the physical verification of 26,489 persons. Out of the 1,326 persons found suspicious during the verification, action was taken under the Police Act against 1,305 persons while other preventive measures were taken against 21 persons.
Under operation Mariyada being undertaken to maintain the sanctity of pilgrimage centres and the sanitation at tourist spots, the police have been arrested those found consuming liquor and other banned items along the banks of the Ganga river and penalising those found littering tourist spots.
So far, 2,688 persons have been arrested and a sum of Rs 4,48,330 has been collected in penalty under this operation.
